Auricular Acupuncture

Treatments given to people after a diagnosis of breast, prostate or gynaecological cancer can cause hot flushes ranging from uncomfortable to debilitating.

Auricular Acupuncture (or ear acupuncture) is a form of complementary therapy positioning very fine needles into the outer ear. There is significant evidence to suggest that Auricular Acupuncture can reduce both the severity and frequency of hot flushes in many people. Each Acupuncture point being treated is said to trigger electrical impulses from the ear via the brain, to the specific part of the body. It is known to have a calming effect on the central nervous and vasomotor systems.

Seven out of ten people that have auricular acupuncture find an improvement in their hot flushes.

Five fine needles will be placed in each ear:Ear with needles

Calms central nervous system and

alleviates stress

Calms anxiety, general relaxation

Helps control urination and heat in the body

Helps cleanse the blood and liver

Strengthens the immune system,

breathing and skin function

(NADA 5 Point Protocol)

Beginning in 1974, staff at Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s Recovery Centre in the South Bronx spent ten years developing the NADA protocol for the treatment of addiction. In New York 1985, the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association started to spread acu-detox internationally with over 10,000 healthcare professionals trained.

More recent studies have shown the benefits of this treatment for cancer patients on reducing hot flushes caused by treatment.

“Both therapists allowed time for me to express my fears and anxieties. I was treated in a very calm and professional manner. At the end of the sessions I felt more positive about my condition and in better control of my feelings.”

“Knowing that the treatment helps with the problem of hot flushes, so relaxing, I now feel more positive for the future.  Thank you so much.”

“Sessions proved to be successful reducing hot flushes by about 50% – more so in the daytime. The therapist created a calming atmosphere in his sessions which I found very relaxing and I would like to continue after a break.”

“I have found that I’m having less sweats and not as severe.  I found the whole experience really relaxing and would benefit having more sessions.”

“I love the sessions. I get really really relaxed. I also try to re-imagine that feeling of relaxation outside of the sessions which helps me feel better. It is great. I like the calming seeds.”

“Would recommend to anyone – the frequency, severity and duration of my hot flushes has greatly reduced, brilliant!”

“My hot flushes have been halved since starting acupuncture treatment.  I noticed the benefits start after the second week.  I am less annoyed by them and can sleep more as I don’t get any at night anymore.”

“Hot flushes are a constant reminder to me of what I am going through.  This reminder of a secondary cancer diagnosis can leave me feeling very anxious and depressed. Now that this has been reduced I am happier and less stressed.”

“The overall result is very good. I feel a lot better and am satisfied with the reduction in flushes.”

“I don’t feel as stressed and it’s good to talk to people outside of the family. My hot flushes are very much better than they were. (They were terrible).”

Other complementary therapies can also help with hot flushes from cancer treatment. If you find that auricular acupuncture hasn’t worked for you, we can give you contact details of other local organisations where you can try other therapies for this.
